IIT Delhi Robotics Festival - Tryst 2026

Long Post Alert!

IIT Delhi Tryst 2026

https://tryst-iitdelhi.org

I had the opportunity to visit IIT Delhi for the Annual Robotics festival TRYST 2026, and didn't miss it even though it was right in the middle of my final exams. A few days' break in the exam schedule due to Holi helped as well.

Though I only had a 3-hour window, I got the vibe: the participants, the energy, the displays, the seminars, and the competitions. I liked the following:

1. The ISRO Exhibition, with models of Chandrayaan-3 (1:15), GSLV Mk III (1:20) and PSLV (1:20).

Chandrayaan-3 had achieved India's historic soft landing on the Moon's South Pole on August 23, 2023, making India the first nation to do so and the fourth country overall to land on the Moon. The mission successfully deployed the Vikram lander and Pragyan rover, completing all its scientific objectives, and demonstrating India's advanced space capabilities.

The GSLV Mk III, now redesignated as LVM3 (Launch Vehicle Mark-3), is ISRO's most powerful three-stage medium-lift launch vehicle designed to carry 4-ton class satellites into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) and 10-ton payloads into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The vehicle uses an indigenous cryogenic engine, enhancing India's self-reliance in space launch technology. It enables India to launch heavy communication satellites independently and is used for crewed missions. It has successfully launched Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3, and OneWeb commercial missions.

2. Red Bull Formula 1 Car:

It was exciting to see an actual F1 Car. And one that has won 4 consecutive World Championships, shattering the record for most (19) wins in a single season. Would have loved it if they had a session explaining what goes into building and running it.

3. Seminar on IIT Delhi’s entry in the Formula Bharat 2026 at Kari Motor Speedway, Coimbatore:

I attended the seminar on the IIT Delhi team’s journey in the Formula Bharat 2026 (India’s Formula Student Competition). It was impressive how the team had developed a racing car which passed most of the tests required for a Formula Car. Accumulator Scrutineering, Electrical Scrutineering, Mechanical Scrutineering, Rain Test, Brake Test, and almost the Endurance Test. Super exciting stuff.

4. IRL- Infinite Rocket League [RoboSoccer Redefined]:

This was the most fun. A literal physical translation of my favourite game Rocket League. Robots displaying the art of striking and defending in a completely redefined 3D football arena to outscore their opponent. I wish I could have modified my 3 Kg Sumo Robot and participated!

Reflections:

Though it was an exciting experience, and a day well spent, when I look at it from another lens, it does not sound very promising. When I think that I was at the Robotics fest of the most revered Engineering College in the country. And yet, the super aggressive pace with which the world is moving on with Robotics & AI, it feels we are not up there.

The mecca of Robotics in India had no indigenously developed robots or models on display. Is our pace not matching up? Or maybe I just wasn't able to feel it. I hope it’s the latter.
